Nationally, we face a severe social problem concerning our male youth and the issue is more critical in Hertford County…Fatherlessness.

 

Nationally 40% of all children live apart from their fathers, and in Hertford County the number is a staggering 56%. With the majority of the male youth in Hertford County not having the presence of a male role model other social issues have arose: In our county 35% of the population has not completed High School, 60 %  of these dropouts are male. Moreover, 74% of juvenile crimes are committed by males, and the cycle continues to the next generation because the county has an overwhelming 73% teen birth rate. Because there are not enough resources that support male youth during transitional years these, and many other social problems have arose.
